INAUGURATION
OF THE PRESIDENTIAL COMMITTEE ON THE REVIEW OF THE STATE
OF THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND NATIONAL MUSEUMS
In a bid
to improve the services of the National Archives of Nigeria,
a Presidential Committee was inaugurated by the Federal
Government of Nigeria in person of Chief Ufot Ekaette,
CFR, mni, on the 15th December, 2006.
The purpose of the Committee is to review the state of
the National Archives and the National Museum.
The Members of the Committee is as follows:

Terms
of Reference
The Terms of Reference given to the Committee are as follows:
(i) To examine the state of the National Archives and
of the National Museum and make appropriate recommendations
for the rehabilitation and equipping of both institutions.
(ii) To examine the present status of the National Archives
and recommend an appropriate structure either as Parastatal
or Extra-Ministerial Department, indicating appropriate
domiciliation for it, and taking into consideration the
practice in other parts of the world.
(iii) To review the core functions of the National Archives
and the National Museum and recommend how best to fund
their activities from both the Government and the Private
Sector.
(iv) To make appropriate recommendations on the construction
and equipping of a befitting National Headquarters for
the National Archives as well as rehabilitation of the
Zonal Offices in Enugu, Ibadan and Kaduna.
(v) To make any other recommendations that in the opinion
of the Committee would enhance the preservation of Nigeria’s
records and archival material under the National Archives
and the preservation and exhibition of objects of Nigerian’s
History, Arts and Sciences under the National Museums.
